Which schoolnest Planner Is Right for You?
A thoughtful guide to choosing a planner that fits you in this season of life and learning.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to pick a planner, you’re not alone, and you’re not doing anything wrong. I get that you want to find the best fit for your needs, to not feel like your choice is a waste, and for the planner to completely solve all of your problems! Kidding on the last one, but isn’t that kind of what we want deep down?! Planning tools are deeply personal, and the “right” one depends less on exact features and more on how your brain works, how your days flow, and what kind of support you actually need right now.
This guide is here to walk you through the schoolnest planner options so you can choose calmly and confidently and jump in with excitement!
First Things First: Classic vs Signature Collections
Before we talk about individual planners, it helps to understand the two schoolnest collections. The content inside may be similar, but the experience of using them is different.
The Classic Collection (amazon editions)
The Classic Collection is printed and shipped by Amazon. These planners and notebooks are:
budget conscious
available internationally (US, UK, DE, FR, ES, IT, NL, PL, SE, BE, IE, JP, CA, AU)
offered in a very wide range of student and subject notebooks (16+ subjects!)
perfect bound (like a softcover book)
This collection is a great fit if you:
want easy access and fast shipping
live outside the U.S.
prefer a lightweight, book-style notebook/planner (they’re still substantial in size, but not as dense as the Signature Collection due to paper difference)
are building a large collection of student notebooks
Classic planners are practical, accessible, and designed to be used without preciousness.
The Signature Collection (handmade editions)
The Signature Collection is the premium, handmade line that is printed, bound, trimmed, packed, and shipped by us (wife and husband team Megan & Evan).
Signature planners feature:
buttery-soft, high-quality paper (you’re gonna love it)
high print quality
more tactile, satisfying writing experience
spiral binding or lay-flat binding
a more substantial, heirloom feel
The lay-flat binding looks similar to a traditional softcover book, but opens flatter and stays open more easily, which is helpful for lefties or those with sensory issues with the spine when writing.
Signature planners are ideal if you:
care deeply about paper quality
care about the origin of your products
spend a lot of time writing or journaling
prefer a more durable, keepsake-style notebook
Importantly, many planners share the same or similar interior layouts across collections.
A Note About How Schoolnest Planners Are Structured
One detail that often surprises people:
In most schoolnest planners, the monthly calendars are grouped at the front of the book.
This is intentional. It allows you to:
see the year at a glance
plan long-term without flipping constantly
separate “big picture” planning from weekly details
have much less waste if you skip a few weeks of planning (the main reason!)
Homeschool Lesson Planning Notebook (Classic)
This is the most robust homeschool planning option in the Classic Collection. It’s designed to support both logistical planning and reflection throughout the year. Each planner release has changes year to year, so be sure to look at the details fo the exact one you want before ordering. Layouts and contents vary slightly.
Inside you’ll find (with variations):
Blank Grid Pages/Index
Use these for notes, passwords, taping in printed schedules, planning brainstorms, or anything else you want to reference easily.Blank Yearly Overview Calendar Pages
Write in the months and dates to map out your year at a glance.Daily Tracker Pages
These are fun and flexible - great for curriculum progress tracking or habit tracking. 180 boxes for a standard 180-day school year.Quarterly Planning Pages
Space to document curriculum, classes, activities, unit studies, seasonal events, and rhythms. Plan by school subject, child, or season.Book List Pages

Weekly Lesson Plan Grid (7 subjects × 6 days of school — or adapt as needed)
Daily Details Journaling Pages
Space to write out what actually happened, ideas that emerged, or notes you don’t want to forget.Weekly Reflection Journaling Pages
End-of-Year Reflection Pages
This planner is best if you want:
structure and reflection
room to document your homeschool story
a comprehensive record of the year
space for multiple kids or daily list making that expands outside of a weekly planning spread
Homeschool Lesson Planning Minimalist Notebook (Classic)
This planner contains all the same planning features as the full lesson planner except the daily and weekly journaling pages.
What’s removed:
Daily Details Journaling Pages
Weekly Reflection Journaling Pages
This version is ideal if:
you want clean, efficient planning
you prefer to reflect elsewhere (or not at all)
your lessons easily fit into the weekly planning grid (and remember, you still have an entire two-page spread before each week, which can allow for reflecting or brain dumps)
Think of it as the same planner, just less of a beast.
Weekly Planning Notebook (Classic)
This planner is not homeschool-specific and works as a general life or family planner.
The key difference here is structure:
👉 Months and weeks are interleaved. The Weekly Plan spread is also different - it has a 7 vertical column layout, rather than a grid of columns and rows.
That means:
monthly calendar
followed immediately by that month’s weekly planning pages
then the next month’s calendar and weeks
Inside you’ll find:
Blank Grid Notes Pages
Blank Yearly Overview Calendar Pages
12 Undated Monthly Calendar Pages
12 Blank Monthly Calendar Two-Page Spreads
12 Monthly Brainstorm / Planning Pages
12 Monthly Reflection Journaling Pages
5 Weeks of Planning Layouts Per Month
Weekly Schedule Grids - Vertical Column Layout
Vertical columns can be used in a time-based structure by writing the times in the mini checkbox column, use the open-ended narrow column to the far left to write categories and break your columns into categorized sections by drawing lines across, or just use it as an open checklist for each day!
Choose this planner if:
you’re planning life, work, or family rhythms
you want everything grouped by month
you don’t need homeschool-specific lesson grids
you’re even more of a minimalist than the minimalist planner
Homeschool Lesson Planner (Signature)
This planner mirrors the Classic Minimalist Homeschool Planner on the inside but is offered in the Signature Collection.
Textile Truck Collection:
layflat or spiral binding
6×7 or 7-column Weekly Plan layout
NEW Interleaved Months option! This option spaces the month calendars throughout the planner with 5 weeks of 6×7 planning grids between. It does not include the Weekly Overview spread in order to provide a slim, simple planner option. Ultra Minimalist!
Paper Blooms Collection:
layflat (Blue Blooms) or spiral (Peach and Blue Blooms) binding
6×6 or 7-column Weekly Plan layout
Nature Collection:
layflat or spiral
6×6 or 7-column Weekly Plan layout
This is a favorite for people who want:
the same streamlined layouts (2 options: rows x columns, or 7 columns)
premium paper
spiral or lay-flat binding
a more tactile, luxurious experience
simplicity and beautiful materials
less bulk
Homeschool Lesson Planner – 6-Month Set (Signature)
This option includes the full lesson planner layouts (with daily details pages), but bound as a 6-month version.
Why?
High-quality paper plus a full year of content creates a very thick book and splitting it makes it more comfortable to use.
Choose this if:
you want the full planning + daily journaling experience
you want an upgrade from the Classic Homeschool Lesson Planning Notebook
you like resetting mid-year
Many people use one book per semester. Buy two that match for the year, or mix-and-match!
Weekly Planner (Signature)
This planner uses the same interior layouts as the Classic Weekly Planning Notebook, but in Signature format.
Perfect if you love:
premium paper
spiral binding
the interleaved month/week structure
love the weekly vertical columns and interleaved layout
want a more elevated feel
plan & journal (Signature)
A smaller format planner entered the schoolnest planner family with the Plan & Journal! This is a different layout than the rest of the planner collection, and with a different goal. The Plan & Journal has a simple gridded column layout that is spread across four pages (one week across two 2-page spreads). You can use the subtle time schedule on the side of each column to note scheduled events, or ignore them and just make checklists and journal in the areas that have no plans or lists.
The Plan & Journal includes:
Vision Board
Notes (2 pages)
Year Overview Mini Calendar & Goals/Event Calendar
12 Month Vertical Trackers (2)
Open-Ended Tracker
Book List (4 Pages)
Lists & Plans (16 List Spaces)
Undated Monthly Calendars (12 up front)
Monthly Plan & Reflect Spreads (12 up front)
Weekly Planning 4 Page Spread (52 weeks)
Choose this planner if:
you want a smaller profile planner (7.25×9.5 inches)
need something easy for work and life plans
want a planner that flexes to act as a simple checklist space for your day, hold a light schedule of appointments, or as a simple little daily memory keeper

A Gentle Reminder Before You Decide
There is no “best” planner. As I always say, a planner is just paper with lines, and none of them are magic, but the magic is what happens when you create a regular routine that supports you in a way that works for your life and your brain right now.
You are allowed to:
change planners mid-year
use more than one
skip pages!!!
write messily!!! make mistakes!
not use every single layout (it’s not a big waste to not use a few pieces of paper, I promise)!
adjust as life changes
A planner is not a contract or an assignment to complete. It’s a tool meant to serve you, to be your second brain or your backup companion, not to pressure you.
As you prepare for your next planning phase, I hope this guide helps you choose with clarity, confidence, and kindness toward yourself. And don’t forget, you can reach out to me for planning help anytime!
